Combining Medications

Not surprisingly, perhaps, one medication for fibromyalgia often isn't enough. Some people get relief by taking medications in combination. For instance, research has shown that a combination of amitriptyline and fluoxetine results in greater improvements in fibromyalgia symptoms than either drug alone. An experienced and knowledgeable physician can work with you to develop a program specifically designed to meet your unique needs.

Alert

If you overdose on a tricyclic antidepressant such as Elavil, head to the emergency room immediately. An overdose of a tricyclic can cause dangerous heart rhythms that can be fatal. That's one reason why the SSRIs have surpassed the tricyclics in popularity for the treatment of depression.

Unfortunately, these medications all have potential side effects, and the combination of medications can make side effects more likely. Given how sensitive fibro patients are to drugs (and particularly to side effects), it's very important for you and your doctor to communicate closely while you're being started on new medications. Don't change your use of the medication (or stop it) unless you consult with your doctor. Some meds have the potential for complications if they're stopped too quickly. Only by working closely with your doctor will you be able to pin down the right mix that is both safe and effective.
