What to Expect from a Good Doctor
When you choose a doctor to treat you for fibromyalgia, you should look for someone who first and foremost believes that your symptoms are real and that FMS is a bona fide medical condition. The doctor should also have confidence in finding relief for your symptoms. She should be well versed in the subject of fibromyalgia and should stay on top of research by reading medical journals.
She should also be an effective communicator who can speak to you in comprehensible terms without resorting to medical terminology to explain what she means. At the same time, she needs to be a good listener, even when you're questioning her or telling her you'd like a second opinion. She should always invite you to ask questions and offer ideas.
Alert
Having fibromyalgia or any chronic disease makes you vulnerable to quackery. Be wary of any doctor who promises you quick relief, a special remedy, or even a cure. Treating fibromyalgia takes time and a great deal of trial and error. So if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Finally, a good doctor should be open, honest, and forthcoming with information. He should be willing to provide you with any report or information you want, even if he's afraid the news is bad.
Steer clear of any doctor who is remotely skeptical of fibromyalgia or your symptoms. A doctor who doesn't believe you will only make your symptoms worse. Also, avoid those who are always in a hurry or reluctant to give you the time you need. And of course, do not go to doctors who don't make you comfortable. Your health and well-being depend on your ability to be frank and forthcoming. Any physician who makes you uncomfortable will not encourage open communication.
