Diapering Essentials

It used to be that you didn't have a choice in what type of diaper to use, because everyone used cloth diapers. Then everyone started using disposable diapers, and using cloth diapers wasn't a popular option anymore. But now, even though most people use disposables, you have a choice of which type of diaper to use, especially if you live in a bigger city that has a diaper service so that you don't have to wash them yourself.

Disposables or Cloth?

Both disposable and cloth diapers have improved to the point that either could be used for the average baby. The main benefits of using cloth diapers are that they can be less expensive if you clean them yourself and they don't end up in a landfill like disposables do. The downside is that they don't always absorb wetness as well as disposables do, so they have a greater risk of leakage of urine and stool. On the other hand, some parents report fewer diaper rashes from cloth diapers. Just determine which type fits better into your overall lifestyle and needs, and understand that either can work for your baby.

It's Changing Time

When your baby needs a diaper change, get all of your supplies together. This will include a clean diaper, diaper wipes (or a wet washcloth if your baby's skin is too sensitive for wipes), and any diaper rash creams, ointments, or powders you might need.

Diapers that are only wet are easy to change. Simply remove the wet diaper, clean your baby gently with the wipes or washcloth, and then put a clean diaper on the baby. If your baby had a bowel movement, things will be a little more complicated, as you quickly try to get the diaper changed without making a mess all over your baby and yourself. Instead of taking the diaper off all of the way, it can be better to undo it, and then use the top half of the diaper to wipe the bowel movement into the bottom half. There will be much less of the bowel movement left over to clean with the wipes if you do it this way.

If your baby boy was circumcised, be sure to follow any instructions you were given about the care of his circumcised penis when changing his diaper. For girls, remember to always wipe from front to back, so that you don't push any stool into the vaginal area, which can cause irritation and infections.
