Providing Emotional Support
As the labor goes on (and on and on) and the pain keeps riding the up escalator, the emotional support you give your partner may be the most important thing you can do for her. First labors are almost never as quick as second labors. They can last for twelve to sixteen to twenty-four to thirty-six hours. Obviously, the longer it drags on, the more exhausted and discouraged your partner will be.
In the face of all this, your job is to tell her what a great job she is doing, how much you love her, how hard she is working, how proud you are of her, and how much progress she is making. Your goal is to buck up her spirits and keep her going. Make sure she knows she is not alone and that you are with her all the way.
