Destinations Defined

Destination weddings are growing in popularity as more and more engaged couples are becoming enchanted with the idea of having the perfect sunset wedding on a Caribbean island, or a ceremony in the meadow of an ancestral home. (Sounds too dramatic for you? Just try to remember what it was like to be so enamored of your mate and the very idea of saying “I do.”)

ESSENTIAL

While many destination weddings take place in and around resorts that specialize in hosting these events (which makes the planning infinitely easier), by definition, a destination wedding can take place anywhere.

If your daughter is throwing the “destination wedding” phrase around, she may be thinking of a very traditional ceremony somewhere off the map, or she may be thinking of a really offbeat and unusual wedding in a spot that's central to all of the invited guests (or any combination of these aspects). Your travel time could range from a few hours to an entire day in the air, depending on the location the bride and groom have chosen.

While centralizing the ceremony may be more convenient to some of your out-of-town guests, your in-town friends and relations may see it as incredibly inconvenient. In other words, there's no way to predict how the destination aspect of the wedding will affect the final guest count. You may be surprised to learn that your whole family loves a good, long road trip — or that they're all afraid to travel outside of the city limits.
