The surrounding towns and suburbs of Washington D.C. are as old (if not older) than the city itself. They offer a host of fascinating and interesting things to see and do, from visiting our first president's “gentleman farm” in Mount Vernon (now with its spectacular new visitors' center and museum) to enjoying more modern forms of entertainment like amusement parks and outlet shopping malls. If you have the time you should try to see Mount Vernon and the spectacular Pope-Leighey house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright on the grounds of the neighboring Woodlawn Plantation. They are both worth the trip.
