Plan for Changes in the Weather

Be sure to plan for the weather as you pack for your trip. There are some areas of the country with fairly dependable weather, but others can have extremes that you will need to plan for.

With the Internet, there is really no excuse for not knowing what to expect about the places you will be visiting on your travels. If you are going to Florida's Disney World in November, a quick visit to the Orlando weather Web site gives you historical weather data to help in planning your trip. The average temperature on November 1 in Orlando runs from a high of 71 degrees to a low of 61. Knowing this will help you plan your clothing needs. As you will be in Florida at the end of the hurricane season, it is always wise to take along rain gear or an umbrella, but you will not need winter clothing footwear. Layering is always in style.

ESSENTIAL

Comedian George Carlin has a hilarious comedy routine called “A Place for My Stuff” about our human foible of wanting to carry everything we own with us everywhere we go. It will make you think about the stuff you really need to take on your travels. Warning: As with most of his routines, Carlin does use some language that is not suitable for children or the faint of heart.

Always plan for rain; it can occur anywhere — even in the desert. If you plan menus exclusively for outdoor cooking you may find yourself standing out in the rain with your food getting soggy on the grill. Bring along a rain slicker with a hood; it is not easy to hook up your RV while holding an umbrella.

One of the handiest things you might want to think about adding to your RV is one of those folding wooden clothes dryers. You can find them at Wal-Mart in the same department where they sell irons and ironing boards. These are great for setting up in the bathroom tub for drying small items or bathing suits.
