Bike Tours

If you want to work off some of that great New York food, get on a two-wheeler and take a bicycle tour of the big town. You don't have to be an athlete, just comfortable riding a bike. If you're concerned about pedaling around the Big Apple, take solace in the fact that New York has been named one of the best cities in America to ride a bike.

FAST FACT

The springtime Five Boro Bike Tour takes bikers forty-two miles through all five boroughs. It has been an annual staple for more than thirty years and attracts more than 30,000 riders each year. Traffic is rerouted for this event, the largest biking event in the country.

Bike Central Park offers three ways to see Central Park on wheels. You can rent a bike and cruise on your own, join or form a group and have a guide take you around, or (and this is most cool) relax in the padded seat of a pedicab while the tour guide tells you the story of Central Park and the sights as they pass by. Bike rentals run from $10 for an hour to $35 all day (10 A.M. to 6 P.M.). Free locks for all, and helmets are provided for kids under fifteen.

The guided tours leave at 10 A.M. and cover the whole park in two hours. There is a minimum of six people, but you can call and see if you can join a party. The pedicabs, big three-wheeled bikes with a padded seat in the back, hold three adults or two adults and two children. Tours are forty minutes long and cost $50.

FAST FACT

New York's streets are always clogged with vehicular traffic, but the city has a large population of ardent bikers. Occasionally hordes of bikers take to the streets to celebrate cycling and advocate for environmentally friendly transportation.
