As the song says, New Yorkers want to be king of the hill, top of the heap, A-number-1. This drive, the famous New York drive (some call it pushiness or edginess), has made the city the phenomenon it is. New York has long been a pioneer in the world of architecture, and the city includes some of the most recognizable landmarks in the country. New Yorkers may sometimes be smug in their belief that their city is the center of the universe, the arbiter of taste, the starter of trends, but these landmarks were the biggest and the best when they were built and are still enduring symbols of vision and accomplishment today.
