It's best to visit the Mercado Hidalgo, a block from Parque Zamora, early in the morning. Here, your eyes will catch the unusual shapes and names of some familiar and unfamiliar fruits and vegetables — camotes (sweet potatoes), tamarindos (tamarind fruit), mandarina (tangerines) — and the fragrance of fresh vanilla beans from nearby Papantla permeates the air. Wander through the enchanting witchcraft stalls and the rhythmical meat market, where the butchers beat their knives on chopping blocks to Latin tunes.
