Keeping Your Family Safe in Mexico
Based on media reports in the last few years, you may think traveling in Mexico is dangerous. While problems have arisen in certain areas, the majority of cities and towns in Mexico are very safe. However, there are those who prey on tourists––thieves, pickpockets, and scam artists. A little common sense goes a long way to keeping your family safe while traveling in Mexico.
First and foremost, guard your money and valuables. Many of the better hotels have safes in the room. If not, ask if you can keep your valuables in the hotel safe. If you're carrying traveler's checks, keep the receipts in a safe place and not with the checks. Don't carry your wallet in an obvious place, and don't leave it anywhere. The same goes for cameras. When you leave your room, put any item that's important either in the safe or in your suitcase, and lock it.
If you're driving, park your car in an enclosure or parking garage at night. Place any valuables in the trunk. Don't tempt fate.
