Getting Around Puebla

Streets running from east to west are called avenidas, and those running north to south are called calles. The Avenida de la Reforma and Avenida Avila Camacho divide the town into northern and southern halves.

TRAVEL TIP

From the Mexico City airport, you can take a deluxe air-conditioned Estrella Roja (Red Star) bus to Puebla every half hour for $15 one-way. A stewardess serves snacks and refrescos while you watch a movie on the way.

Puebla has a unique taxi system. Instead of making a deal with the driver for the price of a ride, you buy a ticket from kiosks selling government-authorized rides to specific destinations for a flat fee. You'll find a map at the kiosk that tells you the fare zone for your destination. You can hail a taxi on the street, but make sure it's a marked one. Or you can take the bus for just forty cents — exact change only.
