Some say the streets of Monterrey are paved with gold, but more likely, they're paved with pesos, for Monterrey is Mexico's wealthiest city. Often referred to as the “Sultan of the North,” Monterrey is a progressive city — the most Americanized one in Mexico. Here, you won't find the laid-back lifestyle of the rest of Mexico. Though Monterrey isn't a beautiful or a charming city, it's a sophisticated one, a businessman's town. Regiomontaños, as the residents of Monterrey are called, say the nearest town, Saltillo, is “one hour and three centuries away.”
