Shopping

Because Mazatlán existed as a city before becoming a resort town, modern malls — there are three — were slow to appear here. Instead, you'll find a more Mexican feel to the shops, many of which are open-air. The usual handicrafts pack the local shops, including custom-made leather clothing, serapes, rugs, and works of art. Beach vendors ply the sands with an unbelievable assortment of goods. The ironwood bird and animal sculptures are the best you'll find anywhere and at reasonable prices. One of the more bizarre stores is Sea Shell City (669-913-1301), which sells an amazing variety of shells and ornaments made from them. Meanwhile, the Mazatlán Arts and Crafts Center (669-913-5022) offers an array of Mexican handicrafts.

TRAVEL TIP

When shopping in the local market or buying from street vendors, try to get at least a 30 percent discount.

For a true Mexican experience, visit the lively downtown Mercado José María Pino Suarez, otherwise known as El Mercado Central, an art nouveau steel masterpiece built in 1899, which sells everything from huarache sandals to suet and from painted gourds to garbanzo beans. The diversity of merchandise will astound you.
