Mexico offers a variety of hotels to suit every need and budget, ranging from budget accommodations to posh resorts. You can even stay in an old hacienda. Today, practically all hotels catering to families offer modern accommodations and American-style service. But underneath it all, it's the hospitality of the Mexicans that makes the difference. This seems to show off best in low-rise rather than high-rise hotels and in Mexican and European chains rather than American ones. The country has experienced enormous tourism growth in the last decade, and with that has come an increase in the number and types of hotels.
It's extremely important to make reservations even if you're traveling in the off-peak season. But it's doubly important if you plan on staying in Mexico either before Christmas or two weeks before and after Easter; in those cases, book four to six months ahead. Make sure you have a confirmation in writing from the hotel. If you book through a travel agency, be sure to ask for a copy of the confirmation they received.
