About Guanajuato

Built in a gorge during the Viceregal period, Guanajuato has a special topgraphy that has forced its residents to build their city over and under the terrain. Unlike other Mexican cities, Guanajuato feels like a bit of Old Spain in Mexico.

Today, Guanajuato oozes culture from its markets to its churches to its museums.

Best Time to Go

You can visit the Guanajuato area just about any time of the year although occasional hailstorms occur in November, December, January, and February. Though winter days can be mild, nights can get chilly with frost.

Cuisine

You'll find the cuisine in Guanajuato very Mexican. Enchiladas, lentils done in a variety of ways, tamales, and tacos are all favorites. A popular snack, vasitas de elote (supper in a cup), consists of cooked kernels of corn scraped from the cob then sprinkled with chili powder.

Cautions and Safety Concerns

Because of Guanajuato's hilly, cobblestoned streets, it's wise to wear rubber-soled walking shoes. And unless you visit during the Cervantino Festival, when crowds pack the streets for sixteen days each October, you'll find the city quite safe and well lit.
