How Many Timeshares Are “Unsellable”?

As you have already learned in previous chapters, the timeshare resale market has forever been one in which the buyers are in control. There are far more people trying to sell their timeshares than there are would-be owners out there looking to pay for them, and the lack of balance in the marketplace can mean that, sometimes, a unit simply will not sell — no matter what.

It is impossible to say how many times this happens, but there are enough frustrated would-be sellers out there in timesharing chat rooms to assume that it happens more often than any resort developer will ever admit. Sometimes, a resort's management makes changes that nobody wants to live with at any price. Sometimes, Mother Nature unleashes a devastating tornado or hurricane that flattens an entire vacation region along with all of the timeshare units in it. Sometimes, there is simply a glut of supply in the marketplace, and your honestly fair price is just not low enough to compete with the bargain-basement deals that other people are willing to make.

FAST FACT

If you find yourself as one of the unlucky people whose timeshare simply will not sell, the problem may not be within your control. All of your pricing, marketing, and business associates may be perfectly legitimate while the marketplace itself may simply be overcrowded, as it often has been during the past few decades.

What can you do if you end up with a timeshare unit that you no longer want, but that you simply cannot sell? You can try to make one last-ditch attempt at unloading it on the resale market, or you can go other routes that will at least leave you with something — even if it is far less or far different than you ever envisioned.
