First Whole Foods

There are several theories regarding what is the best progression of solid foods. The fact is that as long as you take the foods one at a time, and are mindful of balancing the diet, the order of foods isn’t important. However, as your child begins to feed himself, new considerations must be taken into account, especially the dangers of choking.

Hot dogs and grapes are the all-time leading choking foods, along with nuts, raw carrots, popcorn, and hard candies. The size and shape are just right for lodging in the trachea and blocking airflow through it.

Most of these foods are not recommended for young children anyway, so by following a sensible diet, your child is already better off.

While few children are allergic to hot dogs, they are not a good source of protein. Yes, they are easy to eat, mild, and most kids gobble them up. But they are loaded with saturated fat, sodium, and sugar. Children are better off eating boiled chicken or turkey.
