How Much Is Enough?
Until they reach age three, kids will typically eat only as much as they need. But as they age, they begin to eat things for pleasure. This sudden change can, if left unchecked, lead to childhood obesity. Kids, like adults, should not eat more than they need to fuel themselves.
Portion Size
As at any age, the palm of the hand is still a good indication of portion size. Beginning at about age five, and until age nine or ten, kids need about half the amount of food that adults eat. Thus, it is important to refrain from serving them the same size portions as the grownups get. If you put that much food in front of them, they will probably eat it, and this will lead to unnecessary weight gain.
