Caprese Salad

The name of this salad in Italian is Insalata Caprese, which means “salad in the style of Capri.” Capri is an island in the Bay of Naples, in the region of Campania. The colors of this salad are said to represent the colors of the Italian flag.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 ripe tomatoes, sliced thinly
  • 8 ounces buffalo mozzarella, sliced thinly
  • 1 cup large fresh basil leaves
  • ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil
  • ½ teaspoon sea or kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon freshly cracked black pepper
  1. On each serving plate arrange alternately slices of tomato, mozzarella, and basil leaves.

  2. Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and serve.
