Men's Needs

Most major health issues that concern men are directly associated with diet and nutrition, and are easily remedied.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death among men. This startling fact is overshadowed only by the fact that two-thirds of the male population never bothers to have their cholesterol checked. It is an easy test, and since dangerous cholesterol levels are easily remedied through diet and exercise, it’s worth a simple blood test.

Prostate cancer and colorectal cancer are two predominant male health problems, yet half of the male population is not aware of the warning signs, and many are too embarrassed to discuss the issue with their doctors.

Fact

Nitrates (nitric acid salt) are used to kill microbes and preserve color in foods, especially processed meats. Your body can convert nitrates to a cancer-causing chemical called nitrosamine. Vitamin C can weaken the conversion in your stomach, but it’s best to look for nitrate-free products.

Colon cancer is more likely to occur in men with a diet high in protein and animal fat and low in calcium. Nitrites, excessive sodium, sugar, and alcohol (more than two drinks daily) also increase risk. Obesity also puts men at risk. Early symptoms may include abdominal pain, blood in stool, or changes in bowel habits. Men over 40 should begin regular screening, especially if there is a history of cancer in the family.

Prostate cancer does not typically exhibit warning signs, but a few symptoms are associated with it, including urinary frequency and urgency, slow stream, and difficulty emptying the bladder. Blood in urine is another sign, although that could indicate several problems and should be attended to immediately. Regular prostate exams should begin at age 50, or earlier if there is a history of cancer in the family.

Herbal remedies for benign enlarged prostate include the herb saw palmetto. Zinc helps regulate testosterone in the prostate. Ginseng, also known as “man’s root,” is said to increase male hormone production and physical stamina.

Men concerned about strength and energy can include the B-complex vitamins, which are vital to conversion of energy from foods. Be sure to discuss all supplements, herbal or otherwise, with your doctor.
