Packing Tips
How you pack depends on the age of your children. Infants and toddlers tend to be gear-intensive. Being completely dependent on others, infants will need their basic supplies like disposable diapers (and zip closure bags for their disposal), baby wipes, a warm blanket, change of clothes, feeding supplies, and medicine. Generally, flight attendants will help you to heat up the formula or make any other special preparations so that you can feed the baby. A car seat can often be used in a plane and is mandatory in a rental car for kids under forty pounds. Two more important things to remember are not to leave that special blanky at home and, whatever you do, not to lose it on the trip.
General items to remember to bring along on the trip include a first-aid kit, sunscreen, insect repellent, self-adhesive bandages, and a little first-aid kit. You might also think about bringing a disposable camera so that the kids can have a good time documenting the trip's highlights in their own special way. Virtually all of these items are readily available in Hawaii, should you forget or need to replenish them.
TRAVEL TIP
Before you leave an airplane, rental car, hotel room, or restaurant, it's a good idea to thoroughly search the general area for those special items so dear to the kids. A lost blanket, toy, or video game can cause some genuine distress that you can definitely live without. Check the seat pockets and under the seats in cars and planes, under the tables in restaurants, and under the beds, behind the curtains, and all the drawers in your hotel room. Also, put special items away before the maids come to make up the beds. A blanket or stuffed animal can get lost in the sheets and carried away!
It's a good thing to keep all the children's stuff separate and readily available. One way to do this with the older kids is to give them their own little wheeled suitcase or carry-on bag. It's fun and there's a good chance that they'll feel like they're sophisticated stuff. It's also a big help to the parents who have luggage, tickets, and the kids to juggle!
