The nickname of the island of Oahu is “the Gathering Place,” and it certainly lives up to this name. The majority of travelers to Hawaii pass through the island on their way elsewhere, and many choose to stay for a while. It's the third largest of the main islands, and while it constitutes only about 10 percent of the area, Oahu is home to around 75 percent of Hawaii's population. Oahu is home to Honolulu, the state's capital and a central administrative center.
