The little island of Lanai is the smallest of the accessible main islands. Up until around 1990, it was known mostly as a vast pineapple plantation rather than a tourist destination. At one time, this plantation was the largest of its kind in the world. Lanai's nicknames, “the Private Isle” and “the Secluded Island,” reflect the fact that the majority of the island is still privately owned and that it is still a very quiet place.
