The Hawaiian culture of today has deep roots in pre-European traditions. Although much has changed since the time of Captain Cook, many of the old ways have survived while many new things that are nonetheless distinctly Hawaiian have emerged. The Hawaii of today is a genuine ethnic melting pot, and the result is often interesting. The knowledge of a few aspects of both old and modern Hawaiian culture will add much to the visitor's experience.
