Maintaining a Standard of Professionalism
In this industry, men and women work in notoriously close quarters. The hospitality industry builds relationships as a result. It is not unusual for friends and couples to develop bonds while working together in the business. While it is appropriate to support these relationships, it is also important to adhere to a standard of professionalism.
Sexual Harassment
Sexual harassment has garnered a lot of attention in recent years throughout all professions. Consequently, companies in all industries have developed a no-tolerance policy regarding sexual harassment. In restaurants, an industry known for its late nights and social drinking, sexual harassment seminars are a good idea to establish safe boundaries for employees.
Taking Cues from Human Resources
Your company may have a human resources department, in which case it is a good idea to request a conference or seminar on sexual harassment issues. Smaller companies may not have an onsite human resources department but may consider a consultation with a human resources director. Companies also hire educators to lecture staff members on topics such as sexual harassment.
Becoming a Role Model
As an event planner, you will likely be an owner or manager of a company. Supervising staff members can be a tremendous responsibility, and your staff looks to you to set an example. Therefore, your staff may mimic your behavior, negative as well as positive. Being on time, dressing professionally, and using constructive language all constitute positive behavior.
Your ethical views can be challenged every day as an event planner. But applying good morals in your work environment can encourage positive behavior from your staff, vendors, and clients. Practicing good ethics is contagious and will set the standards for your company. Gaining a reputation for being fair and always making the right decision is a good place to be in this business.
