Nurturing Staff Relationships

Much like developing a solid core of vendors, establishing a dependable staff will help your events run more efficiently. The more dependable your staff, the more work that can be delegated to each staff member. This will lighten your workload significantly so you can do more marketing. Having a dependable staff can also save you stress on the day of the event.

These days it is not enough to simply pay your staff well. The day-to-day atmosphere in your office is almost as important as the salary you are offering. Gaining the reputation for being a great employer can also attract individuals even when the salary you are offering is not competitive. Here are some ways to create a dedicated group of employees.

  • Create a sense of pride in the workplace. When you take your job seriously and have pride in your career, others will as well. Never speak negatively about an event, clients, vendors, or other employees.

  • Offer benefits. If possible, offer health insurance to your employees as well as vacation time and 401(k) packages.

  • Offer a competitive salary. Salaries will vary depending on where you are located. Ask other event planners for salary recommendations. If your company cannot pay a competitive salary, get creative with bonus programs and gratuities.

  • Recognize special occasions. When possible, celebrate employee birthdays and other special occasions such as anniversaries, the birth of a baby, or the purchase of a new home.

  • Go on a field trip. Plan a field trip to a setting similar to the industry you're in. A vineyard, brewery, oyster farm, or chocolate factory would be good choices for event staff members in the food and beverage industry.

  • Provide staff meals. Show your appreciation for your staff by feeding them on event or setup days. Staff meals are also a great time for your staff to socialize and build relationships.

  • Get involved in charitable causes. Organize your staff to volunteer at a local charity. It is a great way to build camaraderie and help your community.

  • Organize a seminar. An educational seminar can get your staff excited about furthering their careers in the field. The seminar could include a lecture on calligraphy or cognac. A seminar on savings plans offered by a local banker or a motivational speaker could benefit staff members.

  • Plan an event for your staff. It can be a holiday party in January (perfectly acceptable in this industry) or a barbeque in June. Celebrate your staff and the accomplishments of your company.

  • Establish trade in your community. Many companies are willing to create trade accounts. Assess what you have to offer, whether it is a gift certificate to your company or your services for another company's event. Disperse the trade among your staff for good deeds.

When you take the time to nurture your staff, the rewards will come back to you. You will develop a loyal, honest, professional group of people dedicated to working hard for you and your company. Your staff will be your strongest asset when planning and executing successful events.
