Is Event Planning for You?

The first step to becoming an event planner is deciding which industry best fits your lifestyle. As you gain experience in the field you might find that your lifestyle or circumstances may change. The contacts you make will allow you to explore another area of event planning you might not have previously considered. When you are content in your field, you will be happier and more productive in even the most challenging aspects of event planning.

Before you sit in front of a potential employer or potential client, you will need to assess your skills and experience. This will allow you to convey to the employer or client how well you are suited for the job or event.

If the job you are interviewing for involves late nights and you are more of a morning person, then chances are this is not the right job for you. If the client you are meeting with is trying to save money and have you design her centerpieces, it will be best to tell her up front that you have no experience in designing flowers. The services you can offer as an event planner will enrich your job performance and put that special touch on the events you book.

At the same time, your skills can be expanded once you are involved in the field. For example, if you are working in a restaurant setting and your knowledge of wine increases over time, you might begin offering wine pairings with a chef's tasting menu. You might have taken a course in floral design and obtained a permit to shop at your local floral market. You can now design the centerpieces for the functions at the hotel you are working for. You are saving the hotel money and making a little extra as well.

Finding your niche will be easier once you gain knowledge of the field. You might be trying to narrow down your options within the many different organizations that employ event planners. Or you might be trying to gain as much experience as possible before starting your own company. Whichever path you take, this book will help you navigate through the different career choices in event planning and detail their rewards and benefits.
