Threes with a Four Wing
Threes are all about public persona, climbing over whomever gets in their way to becoming king of hill, master of their game, superstar to the max, or whatever makes them rich. Fours are all about introspection, depth, and finding their true self so they can finally be proved unique and special. Fours are infatuated with their own feelings, particularly melancholy; Threes would rather think about what they feel and manufacture upbeat feelings than brood. Fours are about intensity; Threes are about surface. Threes tend to be extroverted; Fours tend to be introverted.
Thus, a Three with a Four wing endures internal skirmishes on a regular basis, which can manifest in manic-depressive swings. They can't help being image conscious or feeling compelled to work hard to achieve exceptional recognition, but their Four wing tends to make them more subdued and much more in touch with their real emotions. Rather than caring what others think of their accomplishments, they are more concerned about what they feel about their accomplishments.
When it works really well, a Four wing helps a Three value her inner life and present her real, as opposed to a false, self. These Threes still want to excel at what they do, but unlike Threes with a Two wing, they do so quietly because they want to do something meaningful that nourishes them far more than they want to do something solely to impress through money or status.
According to The Enneagram Movie and Video Guide, Threes with a Four wing who possess a sensitive artistic sensibility combined with a more introspective, cool, calm, and collected personality include Richard Gere, who embraces eastern religions; former President Jimmy Carter, who founded Habitat for Humanity; intellectually inclined talk show host Dick Cavett; and the late author Truman Capote.
Negative Four energy may cause Threes to swing from a tendency to overindulge in misguided self-reflection and end up doubting themselves at every turn to arrogantly believing that they are smarter than their critics and brandishing their superiority. Four energy sometimes makes Threes vulnerable to emotional instability and low-grade depression.
