Nines with an Eight Wing

A healthy Nine with an Eight wing exudes a palpable, albeit quiet, charismatic confidence. They look and feel comfortable in their own skins — a little too good — and are usually very good at maximizing the sort of king-of-the-jungle command they personify. They almost always get what they want — as if it was their destiny to have it all along.

Unfortunately, under the auspices of Eights' aggressive tendencies, Nines' can lose their congenial disposition and become narrow-minded and willful. If they are pathological, at some point their anger will surface — abruptly and out of proportion. They may be so desensitized that they don't notice the damage they've just inflicted, and they often feel sufficiently justified in going for their opponent's throat.

According to The Enneagram Movie and Video Guide, examples of Nines with an Eight wing include Connie Chung, the Dali Lama, Clint Eastwood, Dwight Eisenhower, John Goodman, Woody Harrelson, Gena Rowlands, Gloria Steinman, and Billy Bob Thornton. Movie roles that depict Nines with an Eight wing include Clint Eastwood in Unforgiven, Woody Harrelson in White Men Can't Jump, Bob Hoskins in Mona Lisa, and Ann Margaret in A New Life.

On the positive side, they have a touch of Eights' energy, which helps most Nines be more confident, assertive, outgoing, and capable of actual rebellion. However, they are more typically torn between needing peace and quiet and wanting to grab whatever they want, or displaying an urge to merge and wanting to push people away.
