As a critic and reviewer, Edgar Allan Poe earned the label “Tomahawk Man.” He had no patience for second-rate work and no compunctions about letting writers know. There were times he recognized true greatness—and times his usually sharp critical faculties were dozing. To earn extra cash, Poe tried the lecture circuit. It was still in its infancy, and it did not always show his best side.
