The academically talented Poe enrolled at the University of Virginia, where he excelled—for the one year he attended. Believing himself to be John Allan's heir, Poe gambled to increase an allowance he felt was too low but which his foster father believed would teach the boy the value of a dollar. Already the first inklings of Poe's literary talent as a writer were evident.
