After years of difficulties with his foster father, Edgar Allan Poe found both an emotional and actual haven in Baltimore with Poe family members. There he experienced the tireless devotion of his Aunt Maria and her young daughter, Virginia—who would later became his wife. No longer a boy and without John Allan to support him, Poe entered the real world with only a keen sense of literature to help guide him.
