Journals and magazines provided natural “day jobs” for Poe, cut off from any inheritance. But his editorial work provided him with a forum for America's first real literary criticism. Not everybody was happy about it. Poe harbored a desire for his own literary magazine, a showcase for none but the best in contemporary literature. It was a dream that never came to fruition for several reasons, most of them having to do with Poe himself.
