Drumming revolves around beats, fills, and beat/fill combinations. Sometimes fills are deliberate breaks from a groove. In this case, the fill acts as segue between phrases or sections in a tune. Other times, fills are built into the groove itself and represent subtle shifts in the music. In this chapter, we will discuss both kinds of fills as they relate to rock drumming and its derivative styles.
