Cleaning Eyes and Ears

Dogs with long, hanging ears, such as spaniels or retrievers, often develop ear infections. The inside of the ears is warm and moist, an ideal home for bacteria to flourish. To prevent problems, keep the ears clean and dry, especially if your dog loves to go swimming.

Pups should also be comfortable with you carefully wiping any discharge from their eyes with a damp cloth and checking their ears. This daily routine, followed with a small treat, will make it much easier for you and your veterinarian if your dog ever has a problem.

When you clean the eyes and ears, also check for the following:

  • REDNESS IN OR AROUND THE EYES: This could indicate irritation or injury.

  • SQUINTING OR WATERY EYES: This could indicate irritation or injury.

  • FOUL ODOR COMING FROM THE EARS: This could indicate infection. Take him to the vet right away.
