Signs of a Well-Fed Dog

Not sure if your dog's diet is the best it could be? There's an easy way to make sure. Examine your dog's overall condition. If you see the following things, your dog is eating well:

  • Shiny coat with no hair loss or sores

  • Healthy skin that's not itchy or inflamed

  • Fresh breath, clean teeth, and pink gums

  • Bright eyes with no discharge

  • Clean ears with no redness or bad smell

  • Small, firm stools

  • Firm muscles and a visible waist behind the ribs

  • Don't be afraid to switch foods if your dog doesn't seem to be doing well on a particular diet. Remember that dogs are individuals, so a particular food, even if it has great ingredients, might not be the right choice for your dog. Try a different brand or protein source (chicken instead of lamb, for instance) to see if you get better results. Just remember to make the change gradually to give your dog's system time to adapt to the change.
