Now Where Did I Put That?

Before you begin grooming, you need to locate all your tools, shampoos, conditioner, and towels and assemble them in a location where you can reach what you need without leaving your dog unsupervised. Make a checklist of items that you'll be using. You may not need all of these items, depending on your dog's breed or type of hair:

  • Shampoos, conditioners, towels, and blow dryer

  • Nail clippers and file or Dremel®

  • First-aid kit, which includes hemostatic liquid or powder to stop bleeding

  • Combs and brushes

  • Dematting and shedding tools and stripping knives

  • Restraints: grooming loops and muzzle or E-collar, if necessary

  • Baby wipes and paper towels

  • Ear cleaner, ear powder, and hemostats

  • Scissors, clippers, blades, and blade wash

  • Hair bows, bandannas, and cologne

  • It's helpful to keep all the items in a box that you can transport to whatever room you'll be working in. When you get ready to start grooming your dog, you can gather the supplies with minimal effort. Once you have them all together, you can work on organizing them so that you know exactly where each tool will be when you need it.
