Itchy Rear

You've groomed your pet and expressed her anal glands, yet she still insists on scooting on her rear. What is the problem? Did you shave around your dog's anus? Some dogs are very sensitive in this area and when you shave the hair short, it itches! It could also be clipper irritation.

To soothe clipper irritation, a little bit of ointment on the area usually relieves the problem. Preparation H®, Gold Bond® powder or lotion, Vaseline®, A&D ointment® (for diaper rash), Bag Balm®, Cortaid®, or a triple antibiotic are good ointments to use. A little witch hazel on a cotton ball applied to the area also helps soothe it.

In addition, this area is easy to nick; you can nick it so slightly you don't really see it due to the folds of skin around the anus. Clean the area first and then apply a little ointment to it. Try to keep your dog from licking it. You may need to use an E-collar for a day or two.
