Drop Coats

These coats are long, straight, and flowing. Breeds such as Maltese, Yorkshire Terrier, Lhasa Apso, and Shih-Tzu can have magnificent drop coats. Drop-coated dogs tend to be less allergenic due to being single coated. Because they have only one hair per follicle and no undercoat, they have less dander because they shed less. The longer a hair grows, the longer it takes to shed.

These coats are truly stunning when full length on dogs, but they are high maintenance and many people aren't prepared for the enormous upkeep. A shorter style on a drop-coated dog still looks cute and makes maintenance easier.

Drop coats tangle easily so they need frequent brushing and combing to the skin to keep matting at bay. Pay special attention to the areas under the armpits, the chest area, and behind the ears where friction from walking, lying down, and scratching can easily mat the hair.
