Limit Your Calls

Limit telephone calls to your lawyer. Try not to call when you're angry or upset because you'll have a hard time focusing on issues. Make a written list of the things you want to discuss before you call so you remember to ask all your questions. Write down your lawyer's answer so you don't have to ask the same questions again.

It's best to keep a record of your phone calls to and from your lawyer. Compare your records to the monthly bills you receive. Though it's not likely that your lawyer will intentionally try to rip you off, mistakes are made.

When your lawyer tells you how the law will affect a certain issue, you may respond, “but that's not fair.” Don't confuse fairness with the law because the two are very different. Remember, your lawyer is the messenger. Don't shoot the messenger who brings bad news.
