Buyer Beware

A few words of caution: Beware of the lawyer who promises you all the things you ask for because it's unlikely you'll get everything. You want a lawyer who helps you develop realistic expectations. The lawyer who promises more than he can deliver often will end up being evasive and difficult to reach by telephone when the day of reckoning arrives.

Beware the lawyer who tries to talk you out of a well-reasoned position, saying things like, “I can get you way more than that” or “You're entitled to permanent alimony” when you don't even want alimony. After all, this is your divorce.

While you do want the lawyer to explain your options, you should be the one who decides which ones to pursue. You want to stay in charge. Remember, you hired the lawyer to work for you. Don't let yourself stray from your own carefully thought-out choices.

You need to use great care in selecting a lawyer who is an expert in divorce. You should be able to trust your lawyer and be able to talk to her. You need to feel that she listens to you and has your best interests in mind. You'll be working closely with your lawyer over the course of your divorce, so you need to feel comfortable and protected by the lawyer you choose.
