Checklist of Secondary Digicam Features

In addition to camera features, there are other important items that you'll want to know about. The following is a helpful checklist that you can refer to when you're evaluating digital cameras. It is designed to remind you of some of the secondary features of a digicam.

What Else Is Included?

Don't overlook these aspects or you may suffer buyer's remorse:

  • Batteries: Find out what kind of batteries the camera uses and how many shots you can expect to get with a set. Find out if a separate battery charger and rechargeable batteries are included in the camera kit. Also, in the original kit, can the battery only be recharged in the camera? This can keep you from using your camera while the battery charges.

  • AC adapter: Do you have to pay extra for an AC adapter or is it included with the digicam?

  • Warranty: How long is the manufacturer's warranty?

  • Software: Your camera will have software for downloading images. Some digicams also include image-editing software. Is the software a full-blown program or only minimal?

  • Computer and printer hookups: Investigate how the camera connects to your computer. Is it a USB port? Some models offer wireless transfer, allowing you to send images to a printer or computer using infrared ports, called IrDA (Infrared Data Association) ports.

  • USB cable: Does it come with a USB cable for transferring the pictures to your computer?

  • If the manufacturer has a Web page for the camera, you should be able to find a spec sheet for the camera and a list of all the extras that come in the basic purchase package.
