Cameras for Special Needs
A camera is a very personal device. If it does not feel right or you cannot use it easily, you will not be happy. Make sure the camera you buy works the way you need it to work.
Some digital cameras can be used as still photo webcams. This means they can be positioned so that they take photos at periodic intervals and the pictures are automatically uploaded to the Internet, where they are displayed almost in real time.
Cell phones that have cameras have come to be known as camera phones. While the photographic capabilities may be limited to small-resolution photos, you can often share photos with other cell phone users. You can even post photos on photo-sharing or photo album Web sites directly from your cell phone. In addition, the resolution and sophistication of camera phones keeps growing. Seven-megapixel cell phones are available in parts of the world, for example. It is estimated that most cell phones will have cameras in about ten years, so camera phones could become a major force in photography.
Glasses can be a real problem with any camera, and digital cameras in particular. There are several solutions. If you feel comfortable using the LCD monitor as your viewfinder, you can keep your glasses on all the time since you hold the camera away from your body to aim and shoot. In this case, it is important to find a camera that you will feel comfortable with when used in this manner. Some viewfinders, both LCD and optical, allow a diopter adjustment. This adjustment means that you can set the viewfinder to match your eyesight. Some high-end cameras have this feature.
While most left-handed people are used to living in a right-handed world, you should find a camera that works with your particular way of holding a camera. Controls in the wrong place can be really annoying, and having to switch back and forth between hands to make settings and view the LCD monitor will not give you a pleasant experience.
A photographer with physical limitations might find a remote triggering device much easier to use than having to hold a camera for each shot. A remote control device is offered for some digital cameras. In most cases it simply trips the shutter, but some offer a zoom setting. These remotes should offer more features in the future, including an LCD monitor on the remote.
