Basic Digital Cameras

Don't overlook basic cameras that cost less than $150. If you have a limited budget, only need to put pictures up on the Internet, or are new to photography, these could be a very good choice. Even though they are inexpensive, keep this in mind that you will need to buy a number of accessories.

What Basic Point-and-Shoot Digital Cameras Offer

Even a rock bottom camera will have a lot of features. Expect a moderate zoom lens of about 3″ and a resolution of 3 to 4 megapixels, which is more than enough for moderate 5″ × 7″ prints and for putting your pictures on the Internet. You will also get a variety of exposure modes, shutter speeds, exposure compensation, and even a built-in flash. There should be an LCD monitor on the back and an optical viewfinder. These cameras also have the capability to take short movies. There should be a self-timer and a basic ability to review pictures just taken on the LCD monitor. Some variation in ISO may even be possible. Not too bad for less than $150.

In addition, since basic cameras do not have as many features as more-advanced models, they are very light and compact. They are quite portable and can easily be carried anywhere in a pocket or purse.

In bright light, LCD screens can be difficult to see. When considering a camera, take it outdoors so you will know how easily the LCD operates in bright light. Change the brightness setting for outdoor viewing. You may find that an alternate viewfinder is necessary. Simple and low-tech optical viewfinders are inexpensive and easy to use.

Limitations of Basic Digital Cameras

Generally, these cameras do not have enough resolution for enlargements of 8″ × 10″ or larger. There will be limited ability to control exposure and limited zoom range. Flash capability will be quite basic. The flash will not have much power and you will probably not be able to add an external flash. Most features will be automatic, so overriding these for more creative control will be next to impossible. The quality of the lens will not be as good as those in the next price range. Canon, Kodak and other well-known manufacturer's make a variety of entry level cameras in this price range.
