How to Name Dated Folders
Assigning folder names with dates can be a bit confusing to the novice, so here is some advice from years of working with tens of thousands of saved images:
Be consistent: While you can assign numerical names in any manner you choose, you should be consistent.
Add extra zeros: Add zeros to single-digit months and days and years. Instead of 6 for the month of June, put 06; instead of 5 for the fifth day of the month, put 05.
Put the year, then month, then day for correct computer sorting: If you want your folders to sort properly in the order that you created them, name your dated folders as follows:
For August 6, 2009, name your folder: 090806. The full path (including drive C:) looks like this: C:PhotosOriginals 90806Cameraphotoxyz.jpg.
This folder will now sort correctly when you add another folder in the following year, such as January 21, 2010. The folder name will be 100121, and the full path will be: C:PhotosOriginals100121Cameraphotoxyz.jpg.
While you can use the normal way of writing a date by putting the month first, then the day and then the year as the name of your folder, it will not sort correctly. After the first year, the computer will sort on the month instead of the year so that all the June folders from different years will be together, rather than the folders being in chronological order.
