Collage/Montage/Composite
Using photographic software, it's fun to mix images to create unique effects. Whether you call it a collage, montage, or composite, a collection of different photos grouped together to form one image can be a visually appealing way to tell a story. As part of your collage, you can include artwork and text, as well as your photos.
A collage is not an easy project to execute; it requires far more than simply assembling miscellaneous images. To create a collage that works, you'll need a good eye for composition, some practice using your software program, and, most importantly, an engaging concept. The images in a collage should have a thread or theme that connects them so that they work together to convey one particular idea or impression.
High-end programs permit you to assign weights to the various images in your collage so that certain objects appear more prominent while others seem to recede. You can also choose the transparency of various objects and the extent to which the edges of photos blend together.
Shoot images with a specific purpose in mind. As you become more adept with your image editor, you will want to experiment with different techniques. One good habit to get into is to keep an eye out for interesting backgrounds that can be used later to enhance shots where the subject is interesting but the background is cluttered or bland.
If you enjoy creating collages, keep an eye open for subjects that could be utilized as elements for compositing. One of the interesting aspects of digital photography is the ability to combine photos. By compiling an image bank, you'll be assured of always having plenty of material to draw on.
