Buying via an Online Auction

There are probably hundreds of sellers at eBay and other auction sites that sell cameras and photography-related equipment. In your search for information and for the best price, checking out auction sites is not a bad idea. However, buying from such an outlet may not be worthwhile. Seriously weigh the pros and cons before you make a decision. In some cases, it may be your only choice or even the best option.

Check the Auctioneer's Reputation

With auctions you should always check comments about the seller before considering doing business. The Internet is quite anonymous, and disreputable sellers abound. Yet if you buy from a seller who has been with eBay for a number of years, who has received virtually no complaints, and who has been given a top grade by eBay with a designation such as Power-Seller, you should not have any problems.

Check the Policies

Just as with an Internet retailer, you should check the auctioneer's return policy, shipping costs, and shipping speed. She may not take charge cards directly and charge payments may be through a middleman such as PayPal.

Why Buy from an Auction Site

Ebay, for example, offers many used items that may not be available anywhere else. If you want a camera that is no longer being made, or accessories for such a camera, then eBay and other auction sites may be the best place to search.

Some retailers sell refurbished cameras as new. This is not only unethical but also illegal. While refurbished models may work well, they should be clearly labeled and sold at discounted prices. Always read the fine print. Reputable dealers state that you will receive your new camera in an unopened box as it came from the manufacturer.
