MySpace Music

Now that you have converted your songs to MP3s, it's time to get your music on the net! One of the largest and most important sites on the Internet for artists who are trying to get their music out is MySpace. MySpace is a social networking site where everyday people can join, find their own friends, and find other people with similar interests. For musicians, it's a great place to share their music and promote their songs.

There are a few different kinds of MySpace accounts. To create a musician account, go to www.myspace.com and click the Sign Up button near the upper right corner of the page. This takes you to a page with a form you can fill out to join. Guess what? This isn't the form you need to fill out, and this is what confuses many musicians.

If you look to the right side of the form, you will see that there are three kinds of accounts you can sign up for—musician, comedian, and filmmaker. In the box for musicians, click the Sign Up Here link and fill out the form on the page that link opens. It asks for your e-mail address and for a password of your choosing. Next you need to put the name you are using to promote your music. Are you going to use your own name, a pseudonym, or a band name? This is where you enter that information. Under that box, you select the genre that best describes your music. This makes it easier for fans of a particular style of music to find you!

You can now edit your profile to add information about you or your band, upload photos, tell people where your upcoming gigs are, and—most importantly—add your music. Click the Edit Profile link to access all of these features. Once you have reached the Edit Profile page, select Manage Featured Songs to upload your MP3s to MySpace.

You can decide whether you want other users to have your songs play in their profiles, whether your songs will automatically play when someone comes to your MySpace page, and whether the songs will be randomized when people come to your page. Then click the Add Songs to Your Profile link in the Current Songs box at the upper right corner of the page. The page that opens asks you to enter the song title and other information like the album name, the year it was released, and the lyrics if you so desire. There is also a box you can check to let other users download your song. Once you click the Update button, you are directed to a page that asks you to upload your MP3 to MySpace. Click Choose File, find the MP3 on your hard drive, click Choose, and then click Upload. Your song is now on MySpace, ready to be heard by the masses!
