Diabetes is, at present, an incurable disease. Although type 2 diabetes can be well controlled to the point of normal or near-normal blood glucose levels, once you have it, it's a lifelong companion. While type 1 diabetes can conceivably be “cured” with a pancreas or islet transplant, both of these procedures currently require a lifelong regimen of immunosuppressive drugs. Still, enormous strides in genetics, transplantation techniques, and stem cell research have brought a cure closer than ever.
